  • Job Description

    · Develops bids for full range of job types (e.g., sub, prime, prime bid package, design-build);

    · reviews bids prepared by others;

    · recognizes and catches errors in bids;

    · verifies that metrics are accurate (e.g., formula, quantity input, price check, standard unit cost);

    · interprets and makes decisions for bids;

    · demonstrates a strong understanding of risk factors and bid thresholds;

    · trains staff (e.g., Schedulers, Input, Takeoff) on proper estimating procedures;

    · plans out the bid process and related strategy;

    · responsible for the bid verification process;

    · follows the bid review procedure and completes the bid review one day ahead of schedule;

    · assists Business Development staff;

    · demonstrates strong knowledge of products and/or project scope of work;

    · meets with clients to review or negotiate project scope;

    · demonstrates thorough knowledge of the construction industry and related trades;

    · supports the estimating process by building construction detail;

    · applies production rates correctly;

    · interprets plans and specifications;

    · improves the accuracy and performance of all bid inputs;

    · bids an average of 2-3 jobs per week totaling between $100,000-$200,000 in revenue;

    · demonstrates knowledge of all vendors, suppliers, their products, and all subcontractors and their specialties;

    · reads subcontractor quotes with a basic level of understanding;

    · conducts pre-construction meetings with the project management team;

    · applies and promotes the value-engineering process;

    · demonstrates proficiency using the Marina Estimating Program (MEP);

    · applies mathematical formulas, unit conversions, and production rates;

    · demonstrates accuracy and timeliness when completing take-offs;

    · reads and understands drawings (e.g., legend, notes, details, index), specifications (e.g., special provisions, standard specifications), scope of work, bid form, general conditions and requirements, and procedures for obtaining missing information;

    · able to customize and scale drawings;

    · demonstrates proficiency across an array of computer applications (e.g., MS Office, Outlook, Word, and Excel, On-screen takeoff software, ZetaFax, Bid Schedule, American Contractor, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer);

    · maintains composure while multi-tasking;

    · demonstrates proper coordination skills when working with others (e.g., business development, clients, Estimating Department staff);

    · attends meetings;

    · interprets specifications, notes, addenda, wages, change orders, or alternates;

    · demonstrates proficiency in related functional areas (e.g., planting, irrigation, drainage, maintenance, erosion control, grading, earthwork, site work);

    · provides excellent service (e.g., accurate, complete, and timely) to clients, work-site partners, and company staff in a courteous and efficient manner.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    An example of the preferred education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and competencies for this position includes: an Associate of Arts degree and at least three (3) years of commercial construction, landscaping, and/or hardscape estimating experience.

    Frequent sitting, time spent on the telephone, repetitive use of hands to operate computers, printers, and office equipment, standing, bending, and stooping, twisting of waist side-to-side, turning and flexion of the neck; and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; occasional walking on uneven terrain for long distances.

    SPECIAL NOTES, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

    Pre-employment: Incumbents must sign the Confidentiality, Non-disclosure, and Non-solicitation Agreement prior to their first day on the job. License: Incumbents are not required to possess a valid driver’s license.

    Language: Though not required, bilingual English and Spanish/Vietnamese skills are desirable.

    Certifications: No certifications are required of this job classification.

    Working Conditions: Work is predominately in an office environment with associated noise, space, and computer screen exposure. Frequent travel to client locations, job sites, and meetings is expected as part of this position.

    Background Investigation: Incumbents must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates may be subject to a background investigation and/or drug test.

    Introductory Period: Incumbents appointed to this job classification serve an introductory period of three months.
