    Marina Landscape, Inc is looking for a Senior Estimator to join our team in Orange, CA. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in estimating, and is looking for a position that allows for growth within the company. This exempt supervisory job classification is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing strategic estimating functions that are aligned with business objectives, staff development needs, and company policies and procedures; performs other work as required.

    Responsible for the performance of the Estimating Department:

    • oversees all job estimates; ensures production rates are accurate, current, and profitable;
    • develops, implements, and tracks departmental plan, performance objectives, and follow-up initiatives to ensure alignment with company business goals;
    • manages personal, staff, and departmental time efficiently by delegating tasks adequately, implementing due dates and deadlines, tracking work flow, and performing detailed follow-up;
    • provides ideas to help improve the department and company across a range of topics (e.g., assessment, analysis, strategic planning, coordination, and innovative solutions);
    • role models team work; leads the team effectively by generating spirit, accountability, and professionalism; ensures all tasks are completed on time;
    • supervises, trains, and evaluates staff;
    • reviews bidding and cost estimating on various construction, hardscape, and landscaping projects;
    • coordinates the bid schedule;
    • oversees analysis of blueprints, specifications, details, and/or scope of work to determine material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor requirements;
    • coordinates bid schedules with Business Development;
    • reviews bids, contracts, and subcontracts prior to passing on to Business Development;
    • evaluates final bid proposal;
    • bids an average of 3-5 jobs per week totaling between $500,000-$800,000 in revenue;
    • coaches staff to ensure they can compute itemized cost factors and prepare estimates used for management purposes such as budgeting, purchasing, planning, and scheduling work; reviews “take-off” reports;
    • assures product quality by using proven estimating methods;
    • trains to specified data entry standards; uses MEP (Marina Estimating Program);
    • proof reads finished projects for missing data, production codes, and bidding alternates;
    • monitors bid preparation, selection of sub-vendors and/or subcontractors, and tracks cost effectiveness;
    • distributes request for quotes and does appropriate follow-up;
    • ensures bid projects are created in company software;
    • offers recommendations to improve cost estimating procedures to reduce future discrepancies between estimated and actual costs;
    • identifies cost trends to ensure accuracy and process improvement efforts;
    • provides informational and product support to all Company customers; and provides excellent service (e.g., accurate, complete, and timely) to clients, work-site partners, and company staff in a courteous and efficient manner.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES

    Knowledge Areas:

    • principles, methods, and procedures associated with construction, landscape, and/or hardscape estimating, systems, market conditions, and trade practices;
    • blueprints, scope of work, and specification drawings;
    • unit costs of requisite project materials; subcontractors and suppliers;
    • company software, Windows Operating System, and the Microsoft Office suite;
    • supervision;
    • business planning;
    • time management;
    • MEP;
    • mathematical operations (e.g., production rates, conversions, and proportions);
    • general laws and rules regulating and influencing construction, landscape, and/or hardscape; and company customer service objectives, norms, and strategies.

    Skills:

    • operate the MEP;
    • perform complex mathematical operations;
    • supervise, train, evaluate, and discipline employees;
    • exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information; and provide excellent customer service by ensuring clients’ needs are fulfilled in an accurate, complete, and timely fashion by demonstrating courtesy, efficiency, and professionalism.

  • Position Requirements

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    An example of the preferred education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and competencies for this position includes: an Associate of Arts degree and at least five (5) years of commercial construction, landscaping, and/or hardscape estimating experience similar to that presented above.

    • License: Incumbents are required to possess a valid driver’s license.
    • Language: Though not required, bilingual English and Spanish/Vietnamese skills are desirable.
    • Certifications: No specific certifications are required of this job classification.
    • Working Conditions: Work is predominately in an office environment with associated noise, space, and computer screen exposure. Frequent travel to client locations, job sites, and meetings is expected as part of this position.
    • Background Investigation: Incumbents must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates may be subject to a background investigation and/or drug test.
    • Introductory Period: Incumbents appointed to this job classification serve an introductory period of three months.
