Build California Ambassador Spotlight: Christopher Tiamzon

In 2023, Build California has engaged with over 35,700 students (about twice the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) through career fairs, student presentations, and industry activations to educate students on career opportunities in construction. We would not have been able to achieve this without the help of our amazing Ambassadors.

Build California Ambassadors are industry professionals who are passionate about educating and supporting the next generation of California’s construction workforce. By sharing their own construction career journey, they help to inspire students and make it possible for Build California to be in many places at once.

Christopher Tiamzon, Community & Citizenship Program Specialist with Turner Construction Company, has been an Ambassador since April 2023 and in that time has attended 6 different career fairs, classroom presentations, and other events in the Southern California region. Recently, we asked Christopher a few questions around his experience in the industry and as a Build California Ambassador. Check out what he had to say below!

Build California: What is your unique construction story, and how do you think it will help inspire students to join the industry?

Tiamzon: There are various career opportunities in the construction field that defy the notion of being stuck in one job. Mine is dedication and hard work were the cornerstone of building new careers in the construction industry. The construction sector demands a commitment to excellence and a relentless work ethic, characteristics that not only shape individual success but also contribute to the industry’s overall advancement. Success in construction is not handed out; it is earned through tireless effort, a hunger for learning, and an unwavering dedication to mastering one’s craft. Whether it’s overcoming challenges on a construction site, acquiring new skills, or taking on leadership roles, the path to a thriving career in construction requires persistence and resilience. The industry rewards those who invest time and effort to hone their skills, adapt to evolving technologies, and embrace the collaborative spirit that defines successful construction projects. In the end, the journey may be demanding, but the satisfaction of witnessing tangible results and contributing to the built environment makes the dedication and hard work invested in building a career in construction truly worthwhile.

My college degree was in geography, with a focus on GIS (Geographic Information Systems), but I had great mentors in the safety field. While in college, I served as a safety consultant for a third-party contractor, eventually progressing to the role of safety coordinator/manager for a general contractor at Skanska USA Building/Civil. During my tenure at Skanska, I shifted roles to assistant superintendent, responding to project needs and consistently challenging myself to enhance my skill sets. Subsequently, Turner Construction recognized my expertise in self-performed trades, cranes, and rigging knowledge, hiring me to ensure a safe and proficient workforce. I am currently a Community & Citizenship Program Specialist working at Turner Construction.

It brings me joy to witness former colleagues who started as apprentices progress to journeymen and ultimately take on the role of a lead foreman for their crew. This is why I do what I do.

Build California: Why are you passionate about supporting the next generation of construction workers?

Tiamzon: I’m genuinely passionate about supporting the next generation of construction workers because I believe in the transformative power of mentorship and knowledge-sharing. Construction is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about fostering a legacy of skills, craftsmanship, and innovation. As someone who has navigated various roles in the construction field, I understand the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for aspiring professionals. Sharing my experiences and insights can empower the next generation to overcome obstacles, embrace diverse career paths, and contribute to the industry’s growth. Witnessing individuals flourish under guidance is immensely gratifying, and I’m driven by the belief that nurturing talent today will shape a more robust and dynamic construction industry tomorrow.

Build California: What is your favorite part about being a Build California Ambassador?

Tiamzon: I find joy in sharing my knowledge with students about construction careers. As someone who has traversed the path of construction careers, I recognize the impact that guidance and firsthand insights can have on shaping a student’s future. Whether it’s discussing the dynamic roles within the field, the fusion of innovation and traditional craftsmanship, or the collaborative nature of construction projects. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the moment when students grasp the potential within construction, opening doors to a world of creativity, problem-solving, and tangible contributions to our built environment. Sharing knowledge becomes a conduit for inspiration, and seeing students embark on their journey with newfound understanding is a source of enduring fulfillment.

Build California: Why do you think others should become Ambassadors?

Tiamzon: Becoming a construction mentor is a rewarding endeavor that not only enriches the lives of mentees but also contributes to the overall growth and sustainability of the construction industry. Mentoring in construction provides a platform to pass on valuable knowledge, skills, and experiences gained over years of hands-on work. As a mentor, you play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of construction professionals, fostering innovation, and promoting a culture of continuous learning. Beyond the technical aspects, mentoring allows for the development of personal and professional relationships, creating a supportive network within the industry. By investing time and expertise as a construction mentor, you actively contribute to the evolution of a skilled and motivated workforce, ensuring the industry thrives with individuals who are not just competent but inspired to excel. Ultimately, being a construction mentor is a commitment to building a legacy of expertise, camaraderie, and sustained success within the construction community.
