What’s All of the Hype Around Modular Construction?
Modular construction is quickly catching the attention of construction professionals across the state and innovating the way we #buildcalifornia. Learn a little bit more about this modern approach to our projects.
What is it?
In modular construction, as the name suggests, “modules” of buildings are constructed in a controlled, indoor workspace rather than being built on location. Later, they are assembled on-site to create a full structure. Just as they can be constructed on-site, they can be taken apart and repurposed later on as needed.
While untraditional, there are many benefits to this method, making it an accessible path for construction companies moving forward.
Speed and Control
Building off-site gives construction projects a greater amount of speed and control, as they can operate independently of unsafe weather conditions that may hinder production on a job site. Companies can complete projects in a shorter amount of time, all while maintaining the same level of building quality and meeting regulations.
In their series about the modular industry, Construction Dive showcases how modular construction has the potential to relieve systems and industries facing strains on their existing infrastructure and capacity — like we are seeing in the healthcare amid COVID-19 — with quickly produced temporary buildings, made from modules.
“Speed to market is the most important factor in this climate, and the sooner the right types of spaces are delivered, the greater the chance that lives are spared,” they say.
Sustainability
Another added benefit is that modular buildings are uniquely suited to sustainability efforts in many ways. According to the Modular Building Institute, building in the controlled, indoor environment “generates less waste, creates fewer site disturbances, and allows for tighter construction.”
Further, the ability to reuse modules not only allows companies to save time on future projects, but they also save materials and energy. As an industry, construction can benefit from incorporating more environmentally-conscious practices like modular construction.
With all of these benefits, modular construction is an excellent avenue for meeting the evolving needs of California.
